2002 Boston 3-Day

"They can because they think they can." ~Author Unknown

Day Zero:  May 16, 2002

Royal Plaza Hotel & Trade Center, Fitchburg, MA

The Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day was one of the most amazing experiences of my life!  Pallota Teamworks theme for the walk is HumanKind:  be both.  Everyone was wonderful, people were great and the crew was amazing.

Read about our story here!  On the bottom of each page is a link to the next part of the journey.  Check out the photo album when you're done!

Our journey started when we left home and headed to Fitchburg for registration - aka Day Zero.  We were told in advance that registration would take at least a few hours so we planned to go to Fitchburg early, stay at the host hotel and check out the process.

We arrived at the Royal Plaza at 10:30 am.  Kathey and I met up with Karen, another walker from Connecticut who was also a first-time walker.  The three of us went to see what was going on.  Crew members went through registration first so we had nothing to do but wait our turn.  People were already in line - even though they weren't starting walker registration until noontime.

The three of us decided to help out  with check-in.  It was the best decision we made!  We went to the volunteer meeting and saw the safety video with the crew and were the first three walkers to register.  We were given our walker credentials - a lanyard with all the information we needed to know like our tent address (H3), emergency info, walker number and even the number of events we've done.

We spent the next four hours helping out.  Kathey directed traffic to the different check-in stations and I tallied up donations for walkers turning them that day.  It was great to see the other side of the 3-Day and to watch it all come together!  The process was very well put together and it was painless.  Everyone was excited and ready to go!  Most of the walkers stayed in the area so after checking-in, people headed to thier hotels.  Walkers had to be ready to go by 7am - and crew members started working at 4am!

Kathey and I met up with another walker friend of mine, Nancy.  We watched the people come in to register - over 4,000 walkers and several hundred crew.  I double checked my packing list and got everything ready to go.  Then, we had a quick dinner and off to bed we went!  Our wake-up call came at 4:30am.  It's finally here!
